Smartbox

We create assistive technology that helps disabled people to communicate and be independent.

Smartbox is a leading global provider of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) solutions that give disabled children and adults a voice and enable them to live more independently. They have offices in Malvern, Bristol, Ireland, and the USA, and work closely with a global network of partners to deliver their technology to people around the world.

Grid AAC software sits at the heart of everything Smartbox does, enabling people to communicate with symbols and text, use social media, control their environment, browse the web and much more. It offers a flexible communication package that supports a wide range of conditions and literacy levels. The software is continually developed and is available on Windows devices and iPad, bringing AAC users the latest features and content each month.

We are also the creators of Grid Pad communication aids and provide a range of hardware solutions that are designed to work seamlessly with Grid AAC software. People with complex communication needs and physical disabilities can interact with these devices in the way that suits them best – from eye tracking technology and pointing devices to switches and touchscreens.

The Smartbox team offer a comprehensive package of assessments, support, training, and repair services, to make sure the people using their products are supported at every stage of their communication journey.

Smartbox became part of the CareTech group in October 2020. Both CareTech and Smartbox have been helping people with complex physical and cognitive challenges for over 20 years. Together we have delivered some exciting initiatives to help us better understand the critical role assistive technology plays in the care and specialist schools’ sector. This includes the 100 Voices pilot programme.

Smartbox is committed to innovation and delivering products that respond to the complex needs of their users. They are striving to make AAC better understood, more accessible and affordable.

“We have real aspirations to grow and make AAC accessible to those that need it most. We are delighted to be part of the CareTech family, where we know we can create great things by working together,” said Dougal Hawes, Managing Director of Smartbox Assistive Technology.
