About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and professionally qualified Medical Advisor to support our fostering service in ensuring safe, informed, and child-centred decision-making.
As Medical Advisor, you will provide expert medical advice regarding prospective and approved foster carers, reviewing health assessments and offering professional recommendations to support fostering approvals, annual reviews, and ongoing suitability assessments.
Key Responsibilities
Review medical reports completed for prospective and approved foster carers.
Provide clear, balanced, and evidence-based medical opinions regarding suitability to foster.
Assess the potential impact of physical and mental health conditions on fostering capacity.
Prepare concise medical summaries and recommendations for fostering assessments and reviews.
Advise managers, social workers, fostering panel members, and decision-makers on health-related matters.
Liaise with GPs, consultants, and other healthcare professionals where additional clarification is required.
Attend fostering panels and professional meetings when requested.
Ensure all medical information is managed in line with GDPR, confidentiality, and safeguarding requirements.
Maintain awareness of relevant fostering regulations, statutory guidance, and best practice.
About You
You will have:
Essential
Fully registered medical practitioner with the GMC
Experience in general practice, occupational health, community health or a related field.
Strong ability to interpret medical reports and present information in a clear, non-clinical summary format.
Understanding of how adult health may impact caring roles
Excellent written communication and professional judgement
Ability to work independently and manage workload flexibly.
Previous experience working with fostering, adoption or social care services.
Experience of preparing medical summaries or reports for panels of Agency Decision Makers
Knowledge of fostering regulations and National Minimum Standards
