Science Teacher

Cambian Whinfell School, Kendal

Salary of up to £35,672 per annum DOE

Full time – 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday

We are an independent residential special school and care home based in Kendal, Cumbria.

Whinfell School is a highly successful school for young people (age7-19) with a diagnosis of Autism. We are rated as 'OUTSTANDING' in both education and care by Ofsted.

The school is made up of 18 students. The school follows the National Curriculum and we support students to gain the best possible outcomes.

Job Role 

We offer an extensive curriculum to our students and currently require an enthusiastic and committed Science Teacher. You will have a flexible, creative and practical approach to learning and be responsible for developing individualised / small group programs. Class sizes are small, up to 3 students with dedicated learning support. You will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

We are ideally looking for someone to work 5 days per week, teaching across the key stages.

Working as part of a committed team, we need someone who can cater for the diverse needs of our students, therefore you need to be:

  • Able to interact with people in a variety of ways.
  • Looking to develop expertise in special needs and Autism.
  • Dynamic and proactive.
  • A contributor to the schools multi - disciplinary team approach.
  • Managing complex behaviours.
  • A proven track record of successfully teaching.
  • Experience of preparing students for a range of qualifications including GCSE.
  • A passion for teaching with the ability to plan and deliver inspiring lessons.
  • Excellent classroom management and organisational skills.
  • An ability to focus on the progress of students on a whole school basis and assess how well specific learning outcomes are being achieved in class.
  • Willingness to contribute to cross- and extra-curricular initiatives and teach outside the classroom.
  • Ideally, experience of SEND.

The main responsibilities are creating and following long and medium term plans, lesson planning, delivering the curriculum to a class group and supporting students with ASC in learning activities and personal skills. You will have the opportunity to work as part of a skilled multi-disciplinary team, aiming to expand the horizons and improve the skills of young people. We deliver expert care and Education whilst incorporating opportunities for staff and students to experience the fun side of life.

The role is challenging but also extremely rewarding. We have successful experience of supporting newly qualified teachers through the induction year and would welcome applications from experienced and newly qualified teachers, or those willing to work towards qualifications.
